How "toxic" are toxic foods to birds?
So my little parrotlet managed to run down my arm this morning and perch on the edge of a cup of steaming hot coffee with chocolate syrup. She managed to consume three large gulps of it before I, in my precaffinated state, managed to pry her greedy self off the edge of the cup. Obviously I would never allow her to eat coffee, chocolate or caffeine as these are toxic to birds. However, she is her usual annoying self 13 hours later and showed no signs of illness throughout the day. So, how toxic are these food items really? Did I just get lucky? I don't want to put her in her cage every time I have a glass of wine or a cup of coffee just in case she pulls this stunt again. I work and she needs her people time. However, I don't want to risk her hurting herself. So whats the verdict?
The worst kind of Chocolate is the very dark chocolate . Chocolate contains theobromine which is the substance that animals like birds,dogs,and cats cannot metabolize and causes all the problems. Your bird luckily did not get enough to harm it. Maybe you should start drinking out of one of those sippy cups or a travel mug with a lid on it. LOL That's a cheeky little bird you have there. Gotta love "em.
