Can a 13 year old look after an African Grey parrot?
Like will a 13 year old girl be able to look after an African Grey parrot and let it live in her room?
Depemds on your child. If your child will take and have the time to take care of it and spend with it. The bedroom would not be a good place. Grey's need family or owner socialization! With the Grey in the bedroom would not be fair to the bird! They can be a very nice parrot to have, they are intelligent, and loving! They are also pretty good at making their own fun with toys. But, they can be very noisy, and could go crazy if they do not get enough attention. Also they need wooden stuff to chew on. If out of the cage they will chew on anything they get their claws and beak on! So do not leave anything in it's reach.
They take a lot of care. The cage, dishes and toys needs cleaning regularly. They need clean food daily. They need fresh water at least daily, many times, several times a day. They need misting down, as a shower, or provide a dish of water big enough for them to take a bath on their own. We use a mister/spray bottle. Then they do get into their drinking water to bathe. Then it needs to be changed afterward. They are good at scattering seed all over. Again, they need lots of toys. Also you have to be careful on foods. Nothing with caffiene! They need fresh fruits and veggies, but becareful not to give apple seeds, they can have small pieces of apple, but not the seeds. You can give snacks like Nutriberries purchased at pet shops, and peanuts in the shell unsalted.
If you get one you need to get a book on them. I think you should investigate online about African Greys, and know what your getting into and what you need to know and do for them.

Greys are an expensive bird, if your child does not take care of it.
They can bring a life time of fun. They mimic most everything they hear! So you have to watch your language. They mimic smoke detecters, touch tone phone beeps, and microwave beeps.
We have an African Grey. We also have a Red Head Amazon, and Green Cheek Conure and a Sun Conure. Of course the Grey is the most talkative.
