Will my avergae sized cat try to kill my parrot?
I am thinking of getting a parrot which could be trained to live and stay on a stand (made for parrots) so it isn't trapped in a cage for its whole life, the only problem is my cat she is a good killer for birds but the average sized bird she will kill would be a robin or a black bird but would she kill a parrot or is it too big for her as she is scared of my rabbits which can be aggressive??
My parrot has a cage but "trapped" isn't the word to describe her life. Her cage is the equivalent to a bedroom, and she spends about as much time per day in her cage as I spend in my bedroom. When she is tired or hungry or had enough playtime she walks back to her cage and climbs in. Sometimes when she is tired she doesn't want to leave her cage. Her cage is her territory & I believe that is important.
However a parrot on a stand would indeed be trapped on the stand. At least in her cage she can swing on her swing & play with her toys & there is plenty of room to climb around. It isn't healthy for a parrot to have to be holding onto a perch for many many hours at a time. Also there is no 100% guarantee that the bird will stay on the perch if she is frightened or sees something yummy in the other room. I have a portable stand up perch for my parrot, sometimes she will be a good girl and stay on it, other times she just climbs or helicopters right down.
Your parrot will need freedom to play.
Also parrots can be very aggressive. My bird has no qualms about walking up to any person/animal and biting them HARD.
If you cat has the kill instinct, chances are she may attempt to play with/kill the bird even if the bird is large, especially if the bird walks up to the cat and behaves aggressively towards it. Cats have a bacteria in their saliva which is deadly to birds, so even a tiny scratch could be fatal.
If your rabbit is aggressive, chances are she will be aggressive back. A beak can do a lot of damage.
I read an article about a lawsuit in which a neighbors cat got into the house next door in which the people had a parrot. The cat was found dead with a paw missing, the paw was found in the macaw's cage.
My advise, get a good sized cage, & make sure to supervise your new buddy when she is out playing.
