How many talons does the largest falcon have in front when it grips its perch? How many in back?
I am a writer with over 2 dozen published books and I want to describe a falcon (the bigger the better) but have no idea how many talons one would see from the front or the back.
The foot of falcons and eagles has 3 digits to the front and one to the back. Here's a picture of the foot: http://ardastra.com/images/talon.gif

The exception is the osprey, in which finger number 4 can move to the back so that you'd see 2 talons forward and 2 back when it's gripping its prey (mostly fish).
