What is the best way to bring Purple Martins to your Purple Martins bird house?
Is it true that Purple Martins eat alot of insects. How can you keep them coming back year after year?
I looked up Purple Martin in my bird book the book says to attract the birds by nesting boxes and gourds, it also say you can establish nesting colonies ..the book says you may have to discourage sparrows from nesting in the boxes before the Purple Martin arrive in Spring ( 6 X 6 inches inside with 2 1/2 -inch entrance hole). Purple Martin feed primarily insects beetles, moths, butterflies, horseflies, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, and dragonflies. Will come for broken up chicken egg shells placed on ground.
Also they like to nest in large active colonies near water.
I hope this gives a bit of insight.
If there is other birds getting into the houses they will not come.
