You can use unvarnish wood pieces (from a craft store) and dye them with food coloring or concentrated kool-aid for colors.
Mix up popsicle sticks, wooden balls, spools, etc with beads, leather pieces, feathers, shiny objects, and string together with cotton rope, hemp (some use, some won't), sisal rope, or leather sinew strips.
